Heinrich Boll Foundation (H.B.F) Scholarships 2018/2019

Scholarship Description
Every year, the Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships (the Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships) to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subject courses and nationalities.

These students are those who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunsthochschulen’).

The Foundation campaigns for gender democracy, social emancipation, and equality between women and men. It is also committed to equality and social participation for cultural and ethnic minorities.

Eligibility
The following general requirements apply to international student applicants (except EU citizens) who wish to study in Germany:
  • You must be enrolled at a state-recognized university or college (e.g. Fachhochschule) in Germany at the time the scholarship payments begin.
  • You should provide proof that you have already graduated with an initial professional qualification. This programme mainly supports students aiming for a Masters degree.
  • You need a good knowledge of German, and require you provide proof of your proficiency. Please note that the selection workshop (interviews, group discussions) will normally be in German. Exceptions (interview in English) are, however, possible.
  • Unfortunately, the current guidelines specify that the foundation cannot support foreign scholarship holders for stays abroad in third countries for more than four weeks.
  • You should definitely apply for a scholarship before the start of your studies, in order to ensure long-term support and cooperation.
  • The Heinrich Böll Foundation cannot award you a scholarship, if you are studying for a one-year Masters degree and were not previously supported by the foundation.
  • Applications are possible before you begin your study programme or within the first three semesters.
  • Applicants must provide proof that they have been accepted as a doctoral student by an institution of higher education in Germany or an EU country (for doctoral scholarship).

Having in the past awarded scholarships mainly to students of the humanities, social sciences, art, and culture, the foundation is now, in addition, particularly interested in students of economics, law, engineering, science, mathematics, and journalism.

Number of awards
Approximately 1,000 (around 950 scholarships) are given every year - about 5/6 of them go to undergraduates and graduates and 1/6 to PhD students. The specific number have not been made public, you may inquire this from the Scholarship Provider.

Method of Application
The foundation only accepts online applications. The application portal will be opened about 6 weeks before the application deadlines. The application process, including the application form, will be completed ONLINE; additional application documents will be submitted as PDF. You may visit the application portal (usually available from mid-January or mid-July on www.boell.de/studienwerk).

Please upload your documents as early as possible, as the system can become overloaded in the final days before the deadline. This will help avoid any technical problems which can be caused by increased demand.

DEADLINES:
The foundation holds the application process twice a year. Thus there are two application deadlines each year - early March and early September. The application portal opens about 6 weeks before the application deadline. The next deadlines are 1st September 2018 (Winter) and 1st March 2019 (Summer) respectively.

The scholarship department of the Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students from inside and outside Germany. Bayer Foundations, involved in Promoting Talents Across Borders through its International Fellowship Program is happy to offer the Kurt Hansen Scholarship for STEM student teachers in biology and chemistry (up to Master's degree level).

For the program Kurt Hansen Scholarship, the focus is on study projects, internships, summer courses as well as supplemental courses of study for international students who would like to study, research or complete an internship in Germany, or Germans with up to two years work experience who would like to do a study project or gain practical work experience outside Germany.

Bayer Foundations Kurt Hansen Scholarship for Student Teachers

Eligibility
The Kurt Hansen Scholarship supports students who want to become 
  • Science teachers (STEM)
Applicants should demonstrate a pioneering spirit for science teaching and education, above-average study grades, a high level of motivation and a compelling individual project idea.

The scholarship can be used for special study courses, individual teaching assignments, summer schools, research classes, internships, Master’s or PhD theses or special projects in STEM education, including training-on-the job. 

Note: Scholarships are granted exclusively to students from Germany wishing to study abroad, or to foreign students who are interested in a study project in Germany. This program is not open to postdoctoral students.

The scholarship supports students who want to become Science teachers (STEM i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). Student teachers in biology and chemistry (up to Master's degree level) can apply for the Kurt Hansen Scholarship. Australian National University Terrell Undergraduate Scholarships for International Students

Scholarship Description
The Australian National University, Canberra has established the Terrell International Undergraduate Scholarships for international undergraduate students studying at the university.

The Terrell International Undergraduate Scholarships will be awarded to all eligible international undergraduate students on the basis of their achievement in the first year of studies at The Australian National University. This scholarship also covers 100% Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from the award semester, and duration of undergraduate degree. Recipients are responsible for any Overseas Student Health Cover Costs prior to the award of this scholarship.

The Terrell Undergraduate Scholarship was established to commemorate the contribution of Professor R D Terrell to international relations and international student affairs at the University. 

ANU Terrell International Undergraduate Scholarships

Eligibility
The Scholarships shall be available for award each year to international students who:
  • have completed up to and no more than two semesters at the University and will enrol into their second year; applicants who have completed less or more than 2 sememsters, will not be shortlisted. If you have completed 1 semester, please apply for the next round
  • are enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program at the University;
  • have achieved excellent results during their first two semesters at the University.
Selection criteria:
Applications will be assessed on the basis of academic merit using the results achieved by applicants during their first two semesters at the University. The Scholarships shall be endorsed by the Registrar and approved by the Chair of the University Awards Committee.

Scholarship benefits
The value of the benefits are:
  • 2 x 50% fee sponsorship + 100% of the Overseas Student Health Cover for the remainder of the undergraduate program
  • 2 x 25% fee sponsorship + 100% of the Overseas Student Health Cover for the remainder of the undergraduate program
The 50% scholarship will cover 50% of the cost of the tuition fees for each semester for the remaining duration of the scholar’s undergraduate program or combined program (including an Honours Year) registered by the University on CRICOS, and the cost of the Overseas Student Health Cover (100%).

The 25% scholarship will cover 25% of the cost of the tuition fees for each semester for the remaining duration of the scholar’s undergraduate program or combined program (including an Honours Year) registered by the University on CRICOS, and the cost of the Overseas Student Health Cover (100%).

The Scholarships will not include any cash stipend, or cover for travel, removal or incidental costs. The scholar is responsible for paying the outstanding balance of all of his/her tuition fees after the scholarship has been applied, by the prescribed date as set out by the University each session. The scholar is responsible for the costs of books, study materials, accommodation and all other costs of study.

The Stanford Graduate School of Business (Stanford GSB) at University of Stanford offers the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program to eligible Africans to pursue a Masters in Business Administration at the GSB.

The Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program pays for tuition and associated fees (approximately US $170,000) for citizens of African countries with financial need who wish to obtain an MBA at Stanford GSB. 

Within two years of graduation from Stanford GSB, Stanford Africa MBA Fellows are required to return to Africa to work for at least two years in a professional role that contributes to the continent’s development.

Eligibility
You must demonstrate strong ties to Africa, including the following:
  • You must be a citizen of an African country. Dual citizens are eligible for the fellowship as long as you hold citizenship in an African nation. Residents of an African country who do not have citizenship in an African country are ineligible.
  • You must have completed, or be in the final year of completing, your university studies. If you studied at an undergraduate or graduate institution in Africa, we especially encourage you to consider applying for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program. African citizens who studied in countries outside of Africa are also eligible for the fellowship.
Evaluation Criteria:
  • Commitment to developing Africa: In addition to being citizen of an African nation (including dual citizens), you must show commitment to developing Africa. This includes returning to work in Africa within two years of graduation, for a period of at least two years.
  • Demonstrated financial need is preferred, as assessed through the Stanford GSB financial aid process.
  • Merit, determined by the three criteria used to consider candidates: intellectual vitality, demonstrated leadership potential, and personal qualities and contributions that will add to the class.

Method of Application
To be considered for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship, you must apply to the Stanford MBA Program in either Round 1 or Round 2. We cannot consider you for the fellowship in Round 3. If you have already been admitted to the GSB and have deferred enrollment, you must apply to the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship the year prior to your enrollment. Requirements to apply to this fellowship differ from the requirements for the Stanford MBA Program application.

In the MBA application, you will indicate that you are applying for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship; doing so will trigger a prompt for an additional essay (listed below). For the 12th year, the United States Embassy, Nigeria seeks to identify academically qualified and highly motivated, low-income students in Nigeria to join the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program (OFP).

There are many determined and talented, low-income students in Nigeria who only require financial resources and access to information to better their educational future. OFP’s mission is to assist talented and determined, low-income students who are good candidates for financial assistance from U.S. colleges and universities but lack the financial resources to cover the up-front cost of obtaining admission.

Participants will work with the Embassy's EducationUSA Advisors from June 2018 – August 2019 to try to secure places and financial assistance to begin study in the U.S. in August 2019.

The selection of finalists for OFP is highly competitive, given limited funding. We look for applicants with:
